Traumas and Accidents

Certain traumas and accidents necessitate an ostomy. Persons who are stabbed, shot or who have been in a car accident may perforate the intestine or bladder. With a perforation, the intestinal and bladder contents would be dumped into the abdominal cavity, rather than eliminated through the rectum and urethra or ureters. To prevent this, ostomy surgery is necessary. Luckily, these ostomies often are temporary. After healing, the ostomy can often be reversed. If the injury is severe or if nerves are damaged, the ostomy may be permanent.
